Tile & Caulk in Crystal Lake, IL — Re-Grouting, Single-Tile Replacement, Bath Caulk

Free estimates based on the damaged area, substrate, access, and finish match.

Bathroom and kitchen caulk lines failing, grout lines cracked or stained, single tiles loose or cracked. We pull old caulk completely (not just re-skim), strip damaged grout, replace bad tiles, and reseal. Tile re-grouting is a real job that lasts 10+ years — most caulk-over-old-caulk jobs fail in 18 months.

Process

How a tile & caulk visit goes.

  1. 1

    Strip the old material

Pull all old caulk with a knife (not just skim it), grind out failed grout to clean joint walls.

  2. 2

    Clean and dry

Vacuum debris, wipe with denatured alcohol, let it dry 24 hours before applying new material.

  3. 3

    Reapply

Re-grout with sanded or unsanded grout matched to your existing color. Re-caulk with mildew-resistant silicone.

  4. 4

    Tool and seal

Tool joints smooth, wipe haze, seal natural stone if applicable. Don't shower for 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my bath caulk keep failing?
Common causes include applying over old material, coating a damp joint, movement at the seam, or an unresolved leak. We remove failed material, confirm the joint is dry, and use a compatible bath sealant. Service life still depends on movement, cleaning, moisture, and the underlying condition.
Can you match my existing grout color?
Usually. We carry color samples from major brands (Mapei, Custom, TEC). For stained or chalked older grout, we can also clean and re-color rather than re-grouting from scratch — saves money on big shower jobs.
Is re-grouting a permanent fix or temporary?
Re-grouting can be a durable surface repair when the tile, substrate, and waterproofing are sound. It is not a fix for movement or moisture behind the assembly, so we flag those conditions before quoting cosmetic work.
Can you replace a single broken tile?
Yes — if you have a spare tile from the original install or we can match it. We chip out the broken tile carefully, clean the substrate, re-set with matching thinset, and re-grout. About a 90-minute visit.
What if there's mold behind my tile?
We stop surface work if the substrate appears wet or moldy. The moisture source and any failed waterproofing need to be evaluated and corrected before a cosmetic re-grout or tile replacement makes sense.
How long before I can use the shower?
24 hours after the last grout or caulk application. Don't rush this — water hitting fresh grout washes the polymer out and the joint fails early.
