Process

How a deck repair & refinishing visit goes.

  1. 1

    Inspect the structure

Probe every board and joist for soft spots. Check railings, posts, and stair stringers. We'll show you what's actually wrong before we quote the work.

  2. 2

    Replace and repair

Pull bad boards, sister soft joists, rebuild damaged railings.

  3. 3

    Clean and prep

Pressure wash the whole deck, sand any rough or splintered spots.

  4. 4

    Stain or seal

Two coats of stain or sealer applied with a brush and roller. 24-hour cure before furniture goes back.

Frequently asked questions

Can you refinish in fall or winter?
No. Stain and sealer need dry conditions and temps above 50°F to cure properly. We refinish from late April through early October in Northern IL. Outside that window we can do board repairs, but not the staining.
How long does deck refinishing last?
Stain on real wood lasts 2–4 years depending on sun exposure and how much rain it sees. Composite decks don't get stained but may need cleaning every 1–2 years. We can put you on a maintenance schedule.
Should I refinish or replace my deck?
Depends on the structure. If the joists and posts are solid and just the deck boards are worn, refinishing makes sense. If the framing is rotting or the layout doesn't work, you're better off rebuilding — and that's a remodel project, not a handyman job.
Can you do composite deck repair?
Yes — we can replace damaged composite boards if the original brand is still made (Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon, AZEK). If the brand is discontinued, we'll source the closest match or re-deck the whole surface.
What about hot tub or pool decks?
Hot tub framing and pool decks need engineered specs because of the load. We can do the work, but it gets quoted as a project, not an hourly visit.
Do I need a permit to repair my deck?
Like-for-like board replacement and refinishing don't need a permit. Replacing structural framing or rebuilding stairs sometimes does, depending on the village. We'll tell you if your job needs one.
